I already told you that I like mochi very much. But I have a new favorite when I met them at Patisserie Harmonie at China Town. It is LoMaiChee, the Cantonese style mochi. It is also made of glutinous rice flour. They are put side by side with those little lovely mochis. You will find that they are bigger than mochis and they are coated with coconut. The bigger ball means more fillings inside, which are either the crumbled peanuts or black sesame paste. The dough is soft and chewy. I can taste the difference between LoMaiChee and mochi. Maybe they are made from different types of glutinous rice. The taste of LoMaiChee is more familiar to me since it is similar to those glutinous rice dumplings (YuanXiao) that I took back in China. We eat them when all the family members get together and celebrate the Chinese New Year, since the pronunciation of the food represents the union and the happiness of the family. The round shape of the food also symbolizes the togetherness of the family. The original dough ball of LoMaiChee, which is made purely of the glutinous rice flour, is white. No wonder some people call it snowball. But more eye-catching ones are those with colors. The yellows one are colored by mango juice, the green ones by honeydew juice and the black ones are made by adding black sesame paste to the dough. They are not only pleasant for the sight, and the taste is also enhanced. The first time, I bought a LoMaiChee with honeydew flavor filled with crushed peanuts covered with coconut. What an explosion of nice flavors! I like it very much. I decide to try mango flavored LoMaiChee next time. But when I went to the pastry shop, I only saw an empty plate and the two labels. They are all sold out. It does not matter. I have patience to visit the shop and get them the next time. If you wish that all you family members live happily together, don`t forget to buy some LoMaiChee or mochis when you visit the Asian pastry shop :) They will bring you good lucks.
