Fortune cookie

It looks cute with the shape like a smiling mouth and the golden color. It gives you the joy and the curiosity by hiding a message inside it. That is the fortune cookie. I believe most of people in the north America have tasted it since the Chinese restaurants are everywhere. The first time that I ate it was also in a Chinese restaurant after I came to the North America. After the diner, a waitress brought a small plate holding the bill and fortune cookies for each customer. My friend who welcomed me reminded me to tear apart the cookie and pay attention to a small paper slip inside the cookie. The dinner ends perfectly when every one crunched the cookie and read the text on it, which is either a maxim or a prediction. I did not even notice who paid the bill and how much it cost. What a smart creation in the food industry. Back in China, I did not see those cookie being sold in shops or served in restaurants. My friend told me that the fortune cookies are offered in the Chinese restaurants in the North America for about 100 years. That is unbelievable. One day when I stood in the line to pay for my pastries at the pastry shop in Chinatown, I noticed that they have bags of fortune cookies on the shelf. So I grabbed one to spend enough money to pay by Debit. When I went back home, my husband was curious. “This cookie is simple. It is made only of the flour, the egg and the sugar. There are many other good things to buy. Why you buy this?” Asked he. Since I already bought this, I wanted to give it a reason. So I replied, “I want to enjoy our dinner like we are in a restaurant.” After the meal, I made a cup of tea and took one fortune cookie. I read the message in the paper slip. “Keep the festival spirit all year round.” That is exactly what I am doing now. What is better. It is translated in French (Gardez l`esprit des fetes tout au long de l`annee) since I am here a Montreal. Besides savoring a bit of principles of life, like “Your principles mean more to you than any money or success” or enjoying a prediction, like “You will be rewarded for your efforts`”, I have another reason to take one fortune cookie after each dinner, to learn both French and English.
